Hugo Nomination & Short Story Collections on sale!

May 7th, 2016 (04:39 pm)

"Cat Pictures Please" is a finalist for the Nebula Award, the Locus Award, and (most recently) the Hugo Award for Best Short Story!

To celebrate I put my two short story collections on sale:

Comrade Grandmother and Other Stories kindle | nook

Gift of the Winter King and Other Stories kindle | nook

(Neither of these collections has "Cat Pictures Please" in it, but you can go read that online at Clarkesworld!)

Congratulations on all the nominations!

I'm only sorry that "So Much Cooking" didn't make the list as well; I love both stories.

On the story collections, do you happen to know if either is available in DRM-free format? My eBook reader of choice, Stanza, uses ePub format. While I believe the Nook uses a form of ePub, it has DRM that I don't think I can remove.

I opted out of DRM encryption when I published them (and just checked to confirm that the "DRM encryption?" option was un-checked). Will that fix the problem?

After over an hour of ditzing around, I can report that the answer is yes, despite Barnes & Noble's best efforts. B&N no longer supports direct downloads of purchased books to one's computer, and has deprecated the Nook for PC computer application that lets you do that. But the application is still around, and once I had that, I was able to download both books. (There is, in theory, also a Firefox Greasemonkey script that lets you do this directly, but I wasn't able to get it to work for me. That's what took up most of that hour.)

I've been meaning to get around to figuring this out, so thanks for inspiring me.

Both books are now purchased and safely in my copy of Calibre and thus protected from whatever shenanigans B&N decides to pull.

Going to bed now.
